PAPUA NEW GUINEA GOROKA FESTIVAL

(9 Days/8 nights Program – September 6 – September 14

Day 1- 6th Sept 15- Meals- Dinner only

Upon arrival from international PX flight meet and transfer to the domestic flight POM/Wewak. Upon arrival at Boram airport meet and transfer to the hotel. Overnight in Wewak.- Inwewak Boutique hotel

Day 2- 7th Sept 15- Meals- BLD- Wewak to Kanganamun

After an early breakfast we drive to Pagwi on the Sepik River. The drive can take between 5 and 6 hours as we visit markets and viewpoints along the way. Arriving in Pagwi we board motorized dugout canoes and travel down to Kanganamun. —home of the crocodile cult — and set up for our next two nights in the village. On the Sepik River we will be spending 2 nights in basic dormitory accommodation (bush longhouses) with limited bathing and toilet facilities. Each person will have a foam mattress with sheets and a pillow with pillowcase as well as a mosquito net. Overnight at Ambunit station or similar local village at Kanganamun village

Day 3 – 8th Sept 15- Middle Sepik Tour – Palimbe/Aibom/Chambri Lakes

Today we will travel by dugout canoes along the Sepik River and its tributaries. Before heading out, explore Palimbe village and see their beautiful hand carved totem pole. We will stop at stilted villages to learn about the local way of life, see their Spirit Houses (Haus Tamburan) where rituals and initiations take place and as much as possible, try to meet with the villagers. We visit Aibom Village known for its clay pot makers, and Kanganum village to meet the people and see how they fish, make sago and build their canoes. Overnight at Kanganamun village .

Day 4- 9th Sept 15- Meals- BLD- Kanganamun to Wewak

This morning we visit another village and Haus Tamburan before arriving in Pagwi, a small scattering of houses, where we disembark from our canoes and continue by road to Wewak. This afternoon we have a walk through the town to see the memorial at the site of the Japanese/Papua New Guinea Peace Park. For those that wish, you may also stretch your legs with a walk along the beach or visit the local market. Overnight Inwewak Boutique hotel

Day 5- 10th Sept 15- Meals – BLD

After breakfast transfer airport for your PX flight Wewak/Madang and will be transferred to the hotel. After lunch begin the tour of Madang and the surrounds includes the Balek wild life, Haus Tumbuna, Hobe village and other activities of the day. In the afternoon for overnight at Jais Aben resort.

Day 6- 11th Sept 15- Meals- BLD-

After breakfast you will begin your road tour to the Eastern Highlands Province passing through the Ramu sugar. Pack lunch will be served at Ramu sugar. Upon arrival in Goroka tour the surrounds includes JK McCarthy musuem, University of Goroka & Raun Raun Theatre. Overnight at GK Lodge

Day 7- 12th Sept 15- Meals- BLD- Goroka Festival

After breakfast transfer to the show ground to spend the entire day at the show ground.

A yearly event in Papua New Guinea, the Goroka cultural is one of the best shows in Papua

New Guinea to see some of the amazing traditional dances and tribal attire from over 60

different tribal groups. An early morning wake-up call gets us to the show ground to see the

preparations before the formal show begins. We see the performers preparing their traditional

clothing and body decorations and practicing for their “dances. We spend the day at the

Goroka Cultural show Arena taking in the“sing sing” performances. Overnight at GK Lodge

(TBA)

Day 8- 13th Sept 15- Meals- BLD- GOROKA Festival

After breakfast transfer to the show ground to witness the closing ceremony and to take the

last pictures of the groups that were missed out. After the closing ceremony return to the hotel

for lunch. After lunch begin your scenic road to Asaro valley for the mudman performance and

then return in the afternoon for overnight.

Day 9- 14th Sept 15- Meals-  B

After breakfast transfer to the airport for your PXC Flight to Port Moresby and then connect with your international departing to be nominated from your end.

After getting settled begin the tour of the city and the surrounds includes the botanical garden, national museum and the adventure Park. Return for lunch and then rest of the afternoon you are free. Hotel. Lunch and dinner included. Overnight at Laguna Hotel.

Day 2- 3rd Sept 15- Meals- BLD-PORT MORESBY Q LOSUIA (ILE DE KIRIWINA)

After breakfast transfer hotel to the airport for your CG flight POM/Louisia. Upon arrival from flight meet and transfer to the Lodge. After getting settled begins the tour of the Trobriand Island and the culture, meet villagers, dance shows on evening… Lodge. Overnight at Lokuia Lodge

Day 3- 4th Sept 15- Meals- BLD- LOSUIA (ILE DE KIRIWINA)

The Trobriand Islanders have a fascinating and rich culture. The label of a “free love society” has been placed on the islands, but the sexual practices of these people have been misunderstood. The society does encourage free choice and “casual encounters” as the norm for teenagers, however, people are encouraged to settle down to married life. The belief in this society is that all children are in spirit form until they enter a woman through her head and then are born. In addition to spending time with the villagers, we also explore the island including its beautiful beaches, WWII relics and nearby caves. Our time on Kiriwina Island is flexible so that we can explore according to the group’s interests and local events. Overnight in Kiriwina- Lokuia (Kiriwina)Lodge.

Day 4- 5th Sept 15- Meals-BLD- LOSUIA (ILE  PORT MORESBY QDE KIRIWINA) 

After breakfast transfer to the airport for  your CG flight Louisia to Port Moresby. From the airport you

will be transferred to the hotel. Rest of the day free. Overnight at Laguna hotel.

Day 5- 6th  WEWAKQSept 15- Meals- BLD- PORT MORESBY 

After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for your PX flight POM/Wewak. Overnight at

village Inn. Hotel. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Day 6- 7th Sept 15- MeALS-BLD-WEWAK – MOYEN SEPIK – KANGANAMAN             

After breakfast you will be transferred to Sepik river via Pagwi. Upon arrival jump onto the wooden motorised canoe trip until Kanganaman, and welcome with traditional dances. The village is famous for the oldest « haus tambaran ». Homestay. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight at Kanganamun village

Day 7- 8th Sept 15- Meals-BLD- KANGANAMAN – PALIMBEI – AIBOM – KAMANABIT – KANGANAMAN

After breakfast begin the tour of the sepik as you will discover the Moyen Sepik, with the Palimbe village (haus tambaran, bags bilums…). Boat trip until Aibom, and maybe until Chambri Lakes   Come back to Kanganaman. Homestay. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight at Kanganamun village

Day 8- 9th Sept 15- Meals- BLD- KANGANAMUN – WEWAK

After breakfast transfer back to Wewak with a motorised wooden canoe until Pagwi you jump onto a waiting vehicle back to Wewak. Overnight at Hotel or guesthouse. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight at Village Inn

Day 9- 10th Sept 15- Meals-BLD- WEWAK Q MADANG

After breakfast transfer to the airport for your CG flight Wewak to Madang. Upon arrival transfer to hotel and after getting settled begin the tour of Madang and the surrounds includes loccal market, Kalibobo, Tumbana house, Balek sanctuary, Hobe village…   Homestay. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight at Jais Aben Resort

Day 10- 11th Sept 15- Meals- BLD- MAGANG – GOROKA

After breakfast transfer to Goroka via the Highlands (Ramu valley and Markaham valley). Homestay.

Day 11- 12th Sept 15- Meals- BLD-  GOROKA Festival

A yearly event in Papua New Guinea, the Goroka Cultural Show is one of the best shows in Papua New Guinea to witness some of the amazing traditional dances and tribal attire from over 40 different tribal groups. An early morning wake-up call gets us to the show ground to see the preparations before the formal show begins. We see the performers preparing their traditional clothing and body decorations and practicing for their “dances”. We spend the day at the Goroka show Arena taking in the “singsing” performances. Overnight at Kanda Rest House. Homestay or hotel ? Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Day 12- 13th Sept 15- Meals- BLD- GOROKA Festival – MOUNT HAGEN

After breakfast transfer to the show ground to spend half of the day to see different cultural groups missed out for the first day at the show ground. In the afternoon, transfer to Mount Hagen. Homestay. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Overnight at Magic Mountain Nature Lodge

Day 13- 14th Sept 15- Meals- BLD- MOUNT HAGEN – PAIKONA –  Waghi valley  – MOUNT HAGEN

After breakfast drive down to Paikona village to meet the village chief and his wives. Visit of Waghi valley valley and you will see the local activities. Homestay or hotel ? Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

After breakfast transfer hotel to the airport for your PX flight HGU/POM and then connect with your international departing flight to be nominated from your end.
